What Is Pattern Grading and Why Is It Essential in Apparel Production?


A garment can fit perfectly in size Medium and still have serious fit problems when produced in Small, Large, or XL.


That is because creating a good base pattern is only part of the sizing process. Once the sample size has been fitted and approved, that pattern needs to be carefully adjusted to create the rest of the brand’s size range. This process is known as pattern grading.


Good grading keeps the original design, balance, and intended fit consistent as the garment moves through different sizes. Poor grading can do the opposite — creating armholes that feel too tight, sleeves that become too long, necklines that lose their shape, or larger sizes that simply look like oversized versions of the base sample.


For clothing brands, understanding what grading is in pattern making is important before moving from sampling into production.

What Is Pattern Grading?

Pattern grading is the process of increasing or decreasing an approved base pattern to create additional garment sizes.


For example, if a brand develops and approves a women’s Medium T-shirt, the patternmaker can grade that pattern down to XS and Small and up to Large, XL, and other required sizes.


But pattern grading in fashion is not simply making the entire pattern larger or smaller by the same percentage.


Different areas of the body change by different amounts between sizes. The chest, waist, hips, shoulders, armhole, neckline, sleeve width, and garment length may therefore require different grading increments.


The goal is to preserve the design and fit of the approved garment while creating sizes that are proportioned appropriately for the intended customer.

Pattern Making vs Pattern Grading: What’s the Difference?

Pattern making and pattern grading are closely connected, but they serve different purposes.


Pattern making creates the shapes that will eventually be cut from fabric and sewn together to form the garment. The patternmaker considers the design, measurements, fabric, construction, ease, and intended fit.


Pattern grading starts after that base pattern has been developed and, ideally, fitted and approved. The patternmaker then applies calculated increments to create the remaining sizes.


Think of it this way: pattern making establishes how the garment should fit, while grading determines how that fit should translate across the size range.


This is also why brands should avoid grading a pattern too early. If the Medium sample has a sleeve, waist, or neckline problem, grading it immediately can carry that issue into every other size.


How Does Pattern Grading Work?

Pattern grading begins with an approved base or sample size and a set of grade rules.


Grade rules define how much specific points on a pattern need to move when going from one size to another. These changes may happen horizontally, vertically, or in both directions.


A basic bodice, for example, may require adjustments at the:


  • Shoulder

  • Neckline

  • Armhole

  • Bust or chest

  • Waist

  • Side seam

  • Center front and back

  • Garment length


A pair of pants will have a different set of important grading points, including the waist, hip, rise, thigh, knee, inseam, and hem.


The patternmaker applies these increments carefully so corresponding pieces still sew together correctly. If the armhole changes, for instance, the sleeve needs to remain compatible with the new armhole measurement.


This relationship between pattern pieces is one reason professional grading requires more than simply increasing overall dimensions.

Common Methods of Pattern Grading



Pattern grading in fashion can be completed manually or with digital patternmaking software. The method may change, but the underlying goal remains the same: apply controlled grade increments while preserving the garment’s proportions.

Cut-and-Spread Grading

With cut-and-spread grading, sections of a pattern are cut and then spread apart to create a larger size or overlapped to produce a smaller size.


The required amount is distributed according to the chosen grading rules, and the new pattern outline is redrawn.


This is a traditional manual method and can be useful for understanding how size changes are distributed throughout a pattern.

Pattern Shifting

Pattern shifting is another manual grading technique. Instead of cutting the pattern into sections, the pattern piece is moved horizontally and vertically by predetermined amounts.


The patternmaker traces different portions of the outline after each movement until the new size is created.


Pattern shifting requires accuracy because small errors at multiple grade points can affect the final dimensions and how adjoining pattern pieces align.

Computer Pattern Grading


Most professional apparel development today can also be handled through CAD systems that allow patternmakers to apply, store, and edit grading rules digitally. Current apparel CAD platforms such as Gerber AccuMark support pattern development and grading across complex size ranges.


Digital grading can make the process more efficient, particularly when a brand has multiple sizes or styles. However, software does not decide what a good grade should be on its own. The patternmaker still needs appropriate measurements, grade rules, and an understanding of garment fit.

Why Is Pattern Grading Essential in Apparel Production?

Once a style moves beyond one sample size, grading directly affects the customer experience.

It Creates a Consistent Size Range

Customers buying an XS and customers buying an XL should still recognize the same design.


Accurate grading helps maintain the intended silhouette, proportions, and styling across sizes instead of allowing certain sizes to become noticeably shorter, wider, tighter, or less balanced.

It Protects the Fit You Approved During Sampling

A brand may spend several sample rounds refining the fit of one garment. Pattern grading helps translate that approved fit into the remaining sizes.


That does not mean every body will fit a standardized garment identically. It means each size follows a deliberate sizing strategy instead of being enlarged or reduced without consideration for body proportions.

It Helps Prepare Patterns for Production

A manufacturer needs production-ready patterns for every size being cut.


Once grading is complete and checked, the size range can be used for marker making and production planning. Digital apparel systems commonly combine pattern development, grading, and marker preparation as connected stages of the manufacturing workflow.

It Reduces Avoidable Sizing Problems

Incorrect grading can create problems that may not appear in the original sample size.


For example:


  • Armholes may become too deep or too shallow

  • Sleeves may grow too much in length

  • Necklines can become disproportionately wide

  • Waist or hip measurements may increase incorrectly

  • Rise measurements can affect the balance of pants

  • Design details may shift out of proportion

  • Matching seams may no longer align correctly


These issues become much more expensive to correct once fabric has already been cut for production.


Are There Any Pattern Grading Standards in the Fashion Industry?



Usually, this is the point where clothing brands sometimes get confused.


There is no single universal set of grading increments that every clothing brand must use. Sizing can vary by market, customer demographic, garment category, brand positioning, and intended fit.


There are industry references for body measurements and sizing. ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), for example, publishes body-measurement tables for multiple apparel populations, while the ISO 8559 series addresses body measurement, size designation, and the development of measurement tables used for clothing.


However, these references do not mean every brand must build an identical Small, Medium, or Large.


When developing pattern grading in fashion, brands should establish sizing around their intended customer and maintain that logic consistently.


A grading plan should therefore consider:


  • Brand size chart

  • Target customer

  • Garment type

  • Intended fit

  • Base sample size

  • Fabric stretch and recovery

  • Ease requirements

  • Size range


This is why the phrase pattern grading standards in the fashion industry can be misleading if it suggests there is one universally accepted measurement jump between every size.

Does Every Measurement Increase by the Same Amount?

No — and this is one of the most important things to understand about grading.


Bodies do not grow equally in every direction, and garment proportions should not simply be increased by one fixed percentage.


A patternmaker distributes increases and decreases across selected grade points according to the sizing strategy. The amount added to garment width may differ from the amount added to length, shoulder width, neckline, or rise.


The fabric being used also matters. 


A close-fitting stretch legging behaves very differently from rigid denim trousers. Likewise, an oversized hoodie may require a different grading approach from a fitted woven dress.


The grade needs to support the garment you are actually producing.

What Happens When a Brand Has an Extended Size Range?

Grading becomes even more important as the size range expands.


Applying the same increments repeatedly across a very wide range may not always produce the best fit because body proportions and measurement relationships can change across populations and size groups. Industry sizing references themselves use different body-measurement tables and categories for different populations.


Depending on the product and intended customer, a brand may need adjusted grade rules, additional fit testing, or another base pattern for part of the size range.


For example, a collection extending considerably beyond its original sample size should not assume that every design detail can simply continue growing at the same rate.


This is something worth discussing with your patternmaker during development rather than after production begins.


Common Pattern Grading Mistakes Brands Should Avoid


Most grading problems become harder to solve once a style reaches bulk production.


A few mistakes are worth preventing early:


  • Grading before approving the base fit: Problems in the sample pattern can be repeated across every size.

  • Using generic grade rules for every product: A fitted dress, hoodie, legging, and tailored jacket have different fit requirements.

  • Ignoring the fabric: Stretch, drape, and garment structure influence how measurements behave on the body.

  • Skipping graded-size checks: Reviewing only the base size can leave problems at either end of the size range unnoticed.

  • Changing measurements without checking pattern relationships: Sleeves, armholes, collars, waistbands, and other connecting pieces need to remain compatible.

  • Treating extended sizing as simple scaling: Wider size ranges may require more deliberate fit evaluation.


Pattern Grading Should Be Part of Your Production Planning

Pattern grading may happen behind the scenes, but customers experience the result every time they try on a garment.


For clothing brands, the process should begin with a well-developed base pattern, an approved fit, a clear size chart, and grading rules appropriate for the target customer and garment category.
